Liverpool has found itself the target of ridicule in the Spanish media after being rejected by Real Sociedad's Martin Zubimendi in their latest transfer attempt.

Zubimendi, a key player in Spain's European Championship-winning squad, was high on Liverpool's list as they aimed to strengthen their midfield following the departures of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, and Thiago Alcantara. Initial reports suggested the 24-year-old had agreed to join the Merseyside club, but he ultimately chose to stay with his boyhood team, Real Sociedad. This adds to a series of high-profile rejections for Liverpool, who have faced challenges in securing their top transfer targets this window.

Media Reaction The Spanish outlet AS took a swipe at Liverpool's transfer struggles, publishing an article under the headline "nobody wants to go to Liverpool." The piece highlighted the club's difficulties in the transfer market, noting that Liverpool is the only Premier League team yet to sign a major player this summer. It also listed the many players who have turned down a move to Anfield, including Aurelien Tchouameni, Moisés Caicedo, Roméo Lavia, Jude Bellingham, and Enzo Fernandez, all of whom chose other clubs instead.

Zubimendi’s Decision Zubimendi's choice to remain in San Sebastián was reportedly influenced by the personal efforts of Real Sociedad manager Imanol Alguacil, who used creative tactics like emphasizing the local cuisine and Zubimendi's love of hiking, especially on Mount Ulia, a popular spot near the city. These personal connections, along with Zubimendi's strong ties to his hometown and club, ultimately led him to stay.

Liverpool had been ready to trigger Zubimendi's £52 million (€60m/$67m) release clause and offer a substantial wage increase. However, the Basque midfielder chose loyalty to his current club over a move to Anfield. Liverpool is now exploring other options to strengthen their squad.

Despite missing out on several key targets, Liverpool remains optimistic about the depth of their current midfield, with players like Alexis Mac Allister, Curtis Jones, Ryan Gravenberch, and Wataru Endo expected to step up and fill the gaps left by the departing stars.
